PALMER Variables are logical set of attributes present in a given population. There are three main types of variables in research: independent, dependent, and confounding. Nurse Demnok is currently pursuing his master’s degree in public health nursing. He is on the process of creating a research proposal regarding the effects of the TB-DOTS program of barangay Imbaness on the level of medication compliance of TB patients. The program has been started 5 years ago and is still running at present. Patients who are diagnosed of TB which resides in the barangay and are enrolled in the TB-DOTS program are the population of the study. Medication compliance will be measured and reviewed for a duration of 6 months. Age, severity of the disease, educational attainment and sex are some of the variables that the researcher will also take into consideration. 1. The confounding variable in the study is: a. educational attainment b. TB-DOTS program c. level of medication compliance d. all of the above RATIONALE: A. Educational attainment, along with severity of disease, age and sex are all confounding variables which could affect the dependent variable. Option B is the independent variable while option C is the dependent variable. (pp.79-80, Improving Health through Nursing Research by Holzemer, 1 st edition, 2010) Other variables, besides the independent variable, may affect the dependent variable. If not taken into account, these may confuse the interpretation of the study. (Venzon, L.Introduction to 2. The dependent variable in the research proposal of Nurse Demnok is: a. severity of TB b. TB-DOTS program c. level of medication compliance d. age RATIONALE: C. The level of medication compliance is the dependent variable as this is the one affected by the independent variable, which is the TB-DOTS program. Age and severity of the disease are confounding variables which could potentially affect the dependent variable. (pp.79-80, Improving Health through Nursing Research by Holzemer, 1 st edition, 2010) 3. The independent variable in the research proposal of Nurse Demnok is: a. TB-DOTS program b. age c. educational attainment d. sex

RATIONALE: A. The TB-DOTS program is the independent variable which would affect the level of medication compliance of the patient, which is the dependent variable. Age, sex and educational attainment are all confounding variables which could affect the dependent variable. (pp.79-80, Improving Health through Nursing Research by Holzemer, 1 st edition, 2010) The right to self-determination originated from the principle of autonomy which entitles every individual to informed consent. An important component of self- determination is the control of one’s own life to the future time when they are very sick and are unable to make sound decision. Patient Mortred was diagnosed of lung cancer 2 years ago. It was recently declared that the cancer has advanced to stage 4
