Corporate Social Responsibility-going beyond compliance and engaging gin actions that appear to further social good beyond firm’s interest and law Problems with CSR It is hard to determine the difference between corporate responsibility and social responsibility (promoting own self image) How do you distinguish what is right? CSR literature is country based, global CSR would be difficult Examples of CSR Toms, Starbucks (free trade), Dove (body image/eco friendly bottles) Irresponsibility: Walmart (wages) and BP (oil spill) Ultimately the difference between what is CSR and what isn’t is…. .? The motivation Reading #2 Making Academia Applicable What is the disconnect between academic and businesses? Not being prepared for the workforce, colleges not getting feedback on how to better prepare their students What can we do? If there is tailored curriculum, we could better meet the needs of the firms and create a feedback loop Develop soft skills by learning how to communicate and work in a team, join organizations, know how to network and be good at time management, have an internship What are the modern problems businesses are facing and what are their recommendations?
