Chapter 1 Worksheet Name: Joshua Singer TA and section: Rosemary 1) What is the difference in the primary focus of Malinowski and Radcliffe-Brown and how would studies based on these approaches lead to very different outcomes? - Radcliffe-Brown developed a theoretical approach called structural-functionalism. He concluded that when people properly did their roles it resulted in a stable society. This conclusion was based on the belief that societies “functioned” in order to maintain balance versus the belief that societies functioned because they maintain equilibrium. - Malinowski in his fieldwork tried to understand the “native’s” perspective through participant observation. Malinowski was more focused in investigating the everyday side of life, finding things that influenced their lives day by day. - Radcliffe-Brown had a much more Durkheimian approach which studied human societies as a whole; how they functioned, the social norms, and how they survived.
