REVIEW OF CHEMISTRY 9/11/07 Atom -> Molecule -> Mineral -> Rock Atomic Configuration Atoms “want” three things: o to fill their outer shell (energetically most efficient) o - - bond with each other if they are not filled o - - achieve atomic (electrochemical) neutrality Atoms fill outer shell with e- o Protons cation o Electrons anion o Neutrons isotope Develop relationship with other atoms: BONDING o Ionic bonding: Sodium atom “donates” electron from outer shell to Chlorine, sodium becomes positive & chlorine becomes negative, they stick together- weak bond (carbon w/ ionic bond: graphite) o Covalent bond: Fluorine bond together & share electron- STRONG bond (carbon w/ covalent bond: diamond) o Bonding creates minerals (rock = combination of 1+ minerals) MINERAL Definition: o Solid (ice is a mineral) o Naturally occurring o Homogeneous o Inorganic o Specific chemical composition o Specific structural arrangement Mineral Identification o Hardness – Mohs o Streak
