Homelessness in America Summary of “Understanding Poverty and Homelessness in America” (Article from the May 22, 2006 edition of The Christian Science Monitor ) The Christian Science Monitor, a journal published in Kentucky, wrote an article over the understanding of poverty and homelessness in America in its May 22, 2006 edition. The article goes on to explain that many large cities have been reporting great improvements in their homeless numbers. However, it tells about how the numbers that are reported aren’t necessarily accurate it how many people are truly homeless. The numbers reveal more of the people who are actually on the streets and don’t take into consideration the people and families that are living in poverty and can’t afford to live in a place of their own. The problem is that there are conflicts over the definition of homelessness. Local school districts consider families that can’t afford a place of their own because of poverty as homeless while the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) doesn’t.
