(yes) o In addition to preparing for fight or flight, stress can reduce pain Stress-induced analgesia Pain during time of accident is diminished Studies show that conditioned fear-provoking stimuli trigger an analgesic response o Can be mediated by opiod-receptors Analgesia can be blocked by naloxene Non-opiod systems involved as well Chronic exposure to stressors Chronic stress is damaging to health o Air traffic controllers more likely to develop: High blood pressure Ulcers and diabetes o Concentration camp survivors o Chronic secretion of glucocorticoids ( stroke, heart attacks) Loss of neurons in brain (hippocampal area) Suppression of immune system (illness) Suppression of inflammatory system (delays healing) o Stress on mother affects development of offspring Stress and the Immune Response Stress increases likelihood of infectious diseases Evidence o Students more likely to be ill during exams o
