Chem Final Notes 04:10 Chapter 1 Law:  no exceptions, summarizes what happens experimentally through observations Theories:  attempt to explain observations and laws; not totally correct but still useful Matter:  anything that has mass and occupies space Solid:  definite shape and volume Liquid:  definite volume and no definite shape Gas:  no definite shape or volume Pure substances:  constant compositions Element:  substance that cannot be decomposed chemically into simpler substances Compound:  can be broken down into elements; mixtures are impure Homogeneous mixture : visibly indistinguishable part  Heterogeneous mixtures:  can visually  see the components which can be separated Physical change:  a change in the form of a substance, but not its chemical composition Chemical change:  substance becomes a new substance with different chemical composition and  properties Mega (M) = 10^6 Kilo (k) = 10^3 Deci (d) = 10^-1 Centi (c) = 10^-2
