Lecture #16 15/02/12 POL 200 Y 1 Political Theory Final Machiavelli: -Why are we spending so much time on him??? -Best introduction to modern thought, precursor to Locke and Hobbes. -Helps to learn to think independently by reading independently. Chapter 18: -Relationship between keeping your word and keeping your faith. -Human beings should keep faith with each other as if we are all beasts. -Virtue is a virtue only so far as it is effective as a means. Faith is one of these. -People want to believe you possess it, so indulge! Adaptability is the only virtue, with appearing virtuous in the older sense. Prudence. -Religiosity: the devotion to Another, masking the appearance of devotion to ones self. -Humanism: Dignity of man? -Classical definition of man as a composite being. What we have in common with beasts, were to be reined in. M inverts it. Reason is a weapon of self-preservation. -Where is the basis of understanding human beings as a truly special being? -What is the qualitative difference between man and beast? Where is our freedom? -Caged safety as freedom? Chapter 19: Avoiding Contemptive Hatred -A prince should esteem the great, but not make himself hated by the people. -It might perhaps appear that there are examples contrary, for some people have great virtue of spirit and are still conspired against. Is virtue a sufficient shield against conspiracy. Account of ten Roman emperors: Marcus Aralias: famous for his wisdom justice and gentleness. The true philosopher king. Only mention of philosophy or philosophers. -The Roman Empires had to deal with the cruelty of their soldiers. Army had to be satisfied, cause of the ruin of many emperors. Soldiers replace the Great. People loved quiet, soldiers not so much. -New emperors stuck to the backing of the soldiers, they needed much support. Armies and their soldiers are a crucial concern of a prince. -Treat them like the army you need: Fierce and brutal, in need be at the expense of the people. -Of the ten emperors only Marcus and Severus succeed, and the only two M calls upon to
