1. Class Vote Question o If a star is expanding Gravity is overcoming pressure Gravity and pressure are in balance Pressure is overcoming gravity o Shrinking- gravity is overcoming 2. Planetary Nebula- the Partial Victory of Pressure o Thermal pulse- every time a layer burns off and luminosity increases o Spherical series of shells o Move out relatively slowly (30 km/s) (about the Earth's orbiting speed) 3. Where to After the Asymptotic Giant Branch? o How does the star evolve in the HR Diagram? Horizontal branch- burning helium in the core Burning in shell when increasing (on the right) Burning in core when decreasing (leftish) Asymptotic giant branch- shell AND core burning May form planetary nebula 4. White dwarfs- Gravity's Victory? o HR diagram actually expands to higher temperatures ( to the left) o Star temporarily shoots off in this direction of the diagram before finally joining the white dwarfs at the bottom o White dwarfs
