Transcription Read transcript from 5' to 3', meaning the gene is on one of these strands Promoter: promote RNA polymerase to come in & bind to the region Changes in DNA structure RNA polymerase will unwind the helix & pull apart the dsDNA into 2 ssDNA Coding (sense) strand: contains the DNA code for the transcript Template (antisense) strand: used to make RNA transcript Nucleotides come in as triphosphates Pair of phosphates removed Nucleotides attached to complementary bases on template strand of DNA DNA double helix begins to re-form as RNA polymerase makes transcript & moves forward RNA polymerase will receive a signal when there is enough transcript & it releases itself from DNA DNA double helix & RNA single strand is released Promoter & signal for RNA polymerase are on the coding strand Code: CGA Template: GCT Transcript: CGA *meaning you use the template to build the transcript because you want the transcript to look like the code
