From the 1930’s to the 1950s, care for patients with myocardial infarction included 6 weeks of strict bed rest resulting in decreased cardiovascular functioning capacity. In the early 1950s, it was reported that periods of sitting in a chair reduced morbidity and mortality. In the 1960’s, rehabilitation practices initiated earlier mobilization and electrocardiogram monitoring to help improve patients functional capacities in physician monitored settings (Adams et al., 2007)
