Clients with stable coronary artery disease, and especially those who have participated in a cardiac rehabilitation program, understand the essential benefits of exercise, which include a lower risk of dying, increased exercise tolerance, muscle force production and endurance, reduction in symptoms of angina and improved psychological status and social adjustment. From the 1930’s to the 1950s, care for patients with myocardial infarction included 6 weeks of strict bed rest resulting in decreased cardiovascular functioning capacity. In the early 1950s, it was reported that periods of sitting in a chair reduced morbidity and mortality. In the 1960’s, rehabilitation practices initiated earlier mobilization and electrocardiogram monitoring to help improve patients functional capacities in physician monitored settings (Adams et al., 2007)
