THE MAN BEHIND THE CATERPILLAR 1 The Man Behind the Caterpillar I am sure you are wondering who the man behind the caterpillar is. It is none other than Eric Carle, who’s most famous book, is “The Very Hungry Caterpillar.” Although, this is not his first book. The first book he illustrated was “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you see,” written by Bill Martin Jr. Carle’s first book written and illustrated was “1, 2, 3 to the Zoo.” Eric Carle was born to Johanna and Erich Carle in 1929, in Syracuse, New York. At the age of six, his family moved back to Stuttgart, Germany because his mother was homesick. The Akademie der bildenden Künste, in Stuttgart, was the esteemed art school he graduated from. Eric often thought about returning to America, where he had the happiest childhood memories. So in 1952 with forty dollars in his pocket and a fine portfolio in his hand, He returned to New York. Soon after returning, He acquired a position as a graphic designer for The New York Times.
