FRENCH REVOLUTION 1 French Revolution The year 1789 began a decade of political upheaval in France. Louis XVI became king at the age of 20 and inherited a monarchy that was in financial crisis. Louis XVI only managed to make the financial crises worse. He took out huge loans to pay off debts which resulted in more debts at high interest rates. To help out his financial crises, the king decided to increase taxes which caused problems with the aristocracy. Citing that the King was violating the liberty of his subjects by imposing unfair taxes to those that should be exempt due to their privileged status; the magistrate’s opposed taxation. Six years before the French Revolution, the American Independence was won against Great Britain. Equality, democracy and liberty were among the awareness that was learned from philosophers from both sides of the Atlantic. During the revolution, a united front had formed creating a brotherhood from all of society’s classes against the monarchy. Louis XVI had been losing the respect of the people of France for many years due to his
