Winter 1. What are the meanings of nail and saw? The meaning of ‘nail’ in the poem ‘Winter’ is the fingernail of the boy which he was blowing on because of the cold, and the saw is the minister’s sermon. The word saw was used because the sermon was monotonous and repetitive, much like the sound of a saw. 2. Is the owl’s cry really a ‘merry’ note? How are this adjective and the verb sings employed? The owl’s cry is not a merry note. It is a mournful, haunting and eerie note that brings a relative mysteriousness to the poem. It is mostly sarcasm brought on by the author because, for example, an owl is generally not associated with a ‘merry’ atmosphere. The word ‘sings’ is employed as an adjective and a verb because it is describing the way in which the owl maybe be saying ‘tu-whit, tu-who’ and the simple fact that it is ‘singing.’ However, using the word ‘sing’ was again somewhat sarcasm because a owl does not sing, and the word ‘sing’ is not associated with an owl as an adjective. 3. In what ways does the owl’s cry contrast with other details of the poem? The owl’s cry contrasts with other details of the poem by have almost the entire poem as Duluce et Decorum Est 1. The Latin quotation, from the Roman poet Horace, means “It is sweet and becoming to die for one’s country.” What is the poem’s comment on this statement? The poem’s comment for the statement “It is sweet and becoming to die for one’s country,” is that this statement is thoroughly false. With lines like “…watch the white eyes withering in his face” and “In all my dreams before my helpless sight,” some of the images the poem sends the reader are; darkness, pain, helplessness and terrible suffering. By sending images like these, the poem is saying that war is not something of glory, but an ugly part of life that is falsely portrayed to children as great. 2.
