Lauren Taranow lmt827 11-13-11 Unique: 51070 Discussion 9: Aspirin Synthesis and Analysis This experiment involved synthesizing acetylsalicylic acid, commonly known as aspirin, and conducting a spectrophotometric analysis of the synthesized sample. A calibration curve was created using standards and the absorption coefficient of Beer’s law was determined from this curve. Lastly, this experiment taught how to determine the % purity as ell as the % yield of the sample. To synthesize aspirin, 2.0003 grams of salicylic acid was mixed with 5.0 ml acetic anhydride and 5 drops 85% phosphoric acid, then heated on a hot plate at 75 °C for about 20 minutes. Although the acetic acid vapors had not finished releasing after 25 minutes, the mixture was taken off the hot plate because the reaction had taken so long and 20 ml distilled water was added. Once the mixture had cooled to room temperature, it was placed in an ice bath for about five minutes. This was done to slow the movement of molecules in the mixture to allow the formation of acetylsalicylic acid crystals to form. Some salicylic acid remained after the reaction, and to get rid of most of it, the cooled mixture was vacuum filtered through a Buchner funnel
