CHEMISTRY IN OUR WORLD (CHEM 10030, SECTION 002) SPRING 2010 COURSE SYLLABUS LECTURE Tuesday, Thursday: 5:45 pm – 7:00 pm; Williams Hall 110 REQUIRED MATERIALS Textbook: Chemistry in Context, A Project of the American Chemical Society, 6 th ed. Scientific calculator INSTRUCTOR Dr. Cameron Church E-mail: Office Hours: T, R (immediately after lecture) 7:00 – 9:30 pm (WMH 110) Chemistry Dept. Phone: 330-672-2032 COURSE OBJECTIVES Chemistry in Our World is a course for non-science majors. In this course, basic principles of chemistry will be introduced, using current environmental issues and consumer topics as the basis for discussion. The student will be introduced to a variety of subject matter such as air and water pollution, ozone layer depletion, global warming, nutrition, and alternative fuel use. During this course, the student will be challenged to think critically about current issues (some controversial) and develop their own conclusions on these issues. This course may be used to satisfy a Liberal Education Requirement (LER). LERs as a whole are intended to broaden intellectual perspectives, foster ethical and humanitarian values, and prepare students for responsible citizenship and productive careers. ATTENDANCE Attendance at all class meetings is expected. Students who miss a class are responsible for all materials covered. REGISTRATION REQUIREMENT The official registration deadline for this course is January 31, 2010. University policy requires all students to be officially registered in each class they are attending. Students who are not officially registered for a course by published deadlines should not
