ENES 100 Introduction to Engineering Design Spring 2011 1/1 Problem Set #1 Assigned: Jan. 28, 2011 Due: In class on Feb. 7 (M) or Feb. 8 (Tu) Reading: Chapter 3: Fluid Mechanics and Design Analysis Chapter 7: Computer Aided Design (CAD) Problems: 1. A hovercraft with a square planform area of 0.25 m 2 and a mass of 2.5 kg is to hover with a gap height of 3 mm. Given an air density of 1.17 kg/m 3 and gravitational acceleration of 9.8 m/s 2 , determine the required plenum pressure in Pa and volumetric flowrate in m 3 /s. 2. A lift fan has been selected which can generate 150 Pa at a volumetric flowrate of 0.05 m 3 /s. Given a vehicle mass of 3 kg and a circular planform shape, what diameter should the hovercraft deck be to operate at this condition, and what will be the resulting hover gap height? Assume the density of air is 1.17 kg/m 3 . Pro/Engineer Assignment Each homework assignment includes a Pro/Engineer drawing problem to help you familiarize yourself with the software environment. Pro/Engineer is a powerful CAD software system
