When core competencies are superior to those of the competition, they are called distinctive competencies (Wheelen, & Hunger, 2010, p. 138). Now that we have a proper understanding of each of these terms we should be able to define the differences more effectively. From what I understand, a core competency is a collection of competencies that crosses boundaries within an organization. An distinctive competencies is superior to all those of the competition.
