Les philosophers: men or women who promote the new philosophical and political theory (liberalism), the new economic system (capitalism), the new prominent social class (middle class) Locke’s book was written without resources to surveys, research studies or experiments like similar books today. His theory is that there is no innate (inborn) ideas At birth our mind is a clean state or white paper (p.61) This means that the fetus in the mother’s womb has no perceptions or thoughts and is like a vegetable (p.61) All ideas come first through or from the senses (touch, taste, hear, sight, smell) These sensations are turned into knowledge through the process of reflection on them within our mind i.e. thinking or reasoning. Simple ideas: Our knowledge begins with simple ideas which develop when we are very young Derive from or through sensation, sources are the things that is external to us and imprinted on our mind e.g. color, temperature, texture, taste, smell etc, sensible quality (p.61) The development of simple ideas is a passive activity. The mind cant make or destroy them (p.65) rather, they are imprinted on the mind through the senses.
