The Qur’an The Qur’an is the holy book of Islam and it is the literal word for God in Arabic. The book contains 114 suras , or chapters with 6,236 ayat , or verses. The chapters were mainly ordered by size, largest to smallest, not in chronological order as most scholars believed. A hafiz is someone who had memorized the whole Qur’an and there are many of them from children to elders who memorize it partially or whole. All Muslims must memorize part of the Qur’an to perform the salat . The Hadith Hadith are traditions linked to the sayings and doings of Muhammad, the Islamic prophet, and his sahaba , or companions. The collections were important for being regarded to for determining the Sunnah, or Muslim way of life. The majority of Muslims believed hadiths the essential supplements to and clarifications of the Qur’an and it is also a source for Islamic history and biographies. Qur’an 10:4
