Chapter 9 - Weight Management Concepts o Energy Balance : Amount of calories consumed relative to the amount expended. o Negative Caloric Balance : Calories consumed fall below calories expended (weight loss). o Positive Caloric Balance : Calories consumed exceed calories expended (weight gain). o Isocaloric Balance : Calories consumed are about equal to those used. o Weight Management : Balancing calories consumed and calories expended on a lifelong basis, through exercise and activity. o Globesity : term used for the world-wide trend of world-wide obesity What is behind this trend: Over-consumption: o We consume 250-500 more calories per day than people did 30 years ago o Reasons are portion size, low cost of food, easy access to food To little exercise o Modern lifestyle does not require a lot of walking or hard labor Biological Factors o Our genes contribute to our metabolic rate & fat storage which effects our weight o Non-exercise activity Lifestyle Factors o Higher education is more likely to be physically
