11/9/11 Chapter 14 - What is Addiction and what are its Effects? o Addiction : a continued involvement with a substance or activity despite the negative consequences Four Common Symptoms of Addiction: Compulsion o Almost like obsession, constantly have to be around or talk about it Loss of Control o People are aware of it and do not care o Some people do not realize they are being effected Negative Consequences o Financial losses, job loss, relationships, Denial o The person thinks they are in control - o The most widely used and abused substance in America o Alcohol abuse is common on college campuses Number one drug on college campuses Almost half of all college students engage in binge drinking Binge drinking: Men 5 or more drinks in a row, women 4 or more drinks in a row Binge drinking is the number one cause of preventable deaths among undergraduates in U.S. o
