Indonesian Popular Music : 3 different styles represented by 3 well known artists - Similar to popular commercial music of the rest of the world in that it is circulated through mass media, performed by famous stars - Style of music has Western influences of instruments and harmony Danghut Rhoma Irama Dangut style made popular by Rhoma Irama “king of daughut” Grew up heavily involed in the underground music movement of Western rock but wanted to create a new sound that catered to the Indonesian youth’s interest in modern music but had a distinct Indonesian/Eastern sound He used western-influenced style “orkes melayu” from North & West Sumatra that also incorporated the Eastern sound through popular Indian film songs and made commercially popular by singing about love, nationalism, Islam religion Spread political and religious messages through music couple banned by gov’t
