Some attempts to jump into new industries fail whereas others succeed Railroad companies that tried to get into airlines, trucking, etc., were not successful. Some went into the development of pipelines or telecommunications and often did much better. Among the firms that used to make typewriters, Olivetti did very poorly in PCs, whereas Remington did much better in electric shavers and other personal care appliances. Kodak dominated the market for photographic products based on chemical imaging. The company tried to go into digital products and wasn’t very successful. Should they have tried something else and why?
