As the years go by, evidence of the major impact and damage that global warming is causing to our planet keeps stacking up. Chanan Tigay, a freelance writer in San Francisco and notable contributor to magazines such as Newsweek and The Wall Street Journal, writes that “Worldwide, weather and climate related disasters last year left nearly 70,000 people dead and inflicted nearly $100 billion in Damages.”(733) Global warming is linked to causing powerful storms, melting ice caps, and dramatic temperature variations in areas all over the globe. Although storms are nothing new, they have been increasing in severity and causing havoc to areas all over the globe in recent years. This year alone in the United States has seen record breaking floods along the Mississippi River, giant snow storms from the Midwest to the Northeast, and deadly tornados in the South and Midwest. (Tigay, 733) The recent hurricane along the east coast left thousands inundated and millions without power for weeks after, even though it lost much more of its strength than predicted before hitting the mainland.
