Living things take in and use energy and materials: Organisms take in energy and materials by consuming food. We use the energy to build and operate their parts in ways that keep us alive. b. Living things sense and respond to changes in the environment: A plant wilts when the soil is dry. Humans put on a coat when it’s cold outside. c. Living things consist of one or more cells: ?????? d. Living things maintain homeostasis: Living things compensate for changes though mechanisms that maintain an overall internal state of chemical and physical stability. e. Living things reproduce and grow: Organisms make more of their kind. 2. What is homeostasis? a. The ability to compensate for outside changes to maintain an overall internal state of chemical and physical stability.
