Conclusions Long term memory receives info from working memory and also provides info to working memory Depth of processing predicts memory performance better than repetition alone Chunking arises with expertise and reduces memory load Proactive and retroactive interference cause forgetting (and are similar across species) At some level, memory seems to behave similarly across species False memories can result from source confusion, or source amnesia Components of LTM Sensory input sensory memory attention working memory encoding LTM retrieval working memory Long term memory Implicit Memories that you can demonstrate are there because they affect behavior but we don’t know about them. Priming – previous exposure can faciliate and make you better and quicker to deal with but won’t recall of having seen Habits and skills – Simple conditioning – operant conditioning (experiment where people twitch thumb to turn off white noise) Non associative – habituation (repeated stimulation causes decreased response) Explicit Conscious and Declarative Semantic – knowledge of facts about world. Episodic – memories – I was there. How do we identify these systems? Memory systems A variety of variables or events can affect memory: drugs, types of study, brain damage, test conditions Dissociation: variable or procedure affects one type of memory but not another
