Receptors on retina are what is stimulated. Conclusions Sound is collected by the pinna and concentrated onto the tympanic membrane by the auditory canal. The ossicles (hammer, anvil, stapes) transmit sound energy from the eardrum to the oval window of the cochlea. Inside the cochlea, the basilar membrane is displaced by the resulting pressure wave. The location of maximal displacement corresponds to the pitch or frequency of a sound wave that we hear. We locate sounds based on inter-arrival time, intensity differences, and shaping of sound by the face and head Cells in midbrain that are sensitive to difference Intensity differences between sounds on the right and the left. Psychophysics aims to relate psyc states to physical stimuli Maps of things like the response function. According to signal detection theory response decisions depend on detection ability and bias (motivation). Weber’s law states that as the intensity of a stimulus increases, so does the just noticeable difference (JND) The greater magnitude of background noise, the greater change the noise has to be to be detected. Other minds are mysterious Vision Visible light – tiny segment between ultraviolet rays and infrared rays We don’t see in the infrared but we sense the infrared (warmth) Domininant sense in humans and in other primates As much as 40% of brain devoted to visual processing People form visual representation when touching something. Prone to using visual cortex Translate other stimulation into visual representations The eye often offered as evidence against evolution, but it’s a convoluted ‘design’ How could you get something as complex as eye through evolution? Designer must have had intention and created eye in response to intention. Pathway through which an eye could evolve:
