Woodruff, 1978 Have an idea of how minds work – people have knowledge, belief, desires, intentions Test: Showed chimps pics of people solving problems either with or not with solution. Ape picked pictures with solutions Apes don’t have this capacity. Tried to show that they understand person has intention and pick the right solution for that person. Involves ‘understanding that others have minds,’ – that their behavior is controlled by beliefs, desires, mental states, and intentions Appears to be a central deficit in autism spectrum disorders Joint or Shared Attention Even before three months, caregiver and infant share gaze (early eye contact) From 3-9 months, infants take lots of interest in objects and caregiver shares Caregiver has mental picture that the baby is playing with objects From 9 months on, infants begin to look at object being examined by caregiver Gaze is alternating back and forth, esp with new object Babies learn that caregiver thinks this is a nice object because they’re collecting info on how
