Education: (Wild) Feral Children : o People isolated from human socialization or education o Don't participate in games o Don’t develop intimate relationships o Don’t develop proficient language skills (Ex. Video of Oksana; lived with dogs) Case of feral children suggests that ability to become human is only a potential o Education required to make a social being emerge Socialization: process of learning culture and becoming aware of yourself as you interact with others Education: a process of socialization whereby knowledge and cultural know-how is transmitted Socio-biologists: believe genes account for not only the physical, but also specific behaviors and practices ALL BASIC BIOLOGICAL IMPULSES ARE SOCIALLY MEDIATED Ex . Hunger ----> Culture (norms, values, beauty ideals) ----> Eating Socialization, culture, religion ---> all social factors that mediate our impulses Socializing Agents Family (important as young child) Schools (formal) Peer Groups (important as teenager)
