Into two classes o Working class has 3 alternatives Cooperate with capitalists Form unions and modify social conditions Make revolutions Whoever controls means of production essentially controls everybody Difference in social position result from different relations to the means of production o New modes of production -> new classes o At both ends of class ladder, class stability is maintained by inheritance, education o Thus poverty and wealth are self-perpetuating Classes also have different 'class cultures,' different lifestyles, opportunities Dominant ideology (that there is no potential for positive change) of lower class
