Lecture Topic: Social Classes Important Figures in ideas of social class Stalin, Marx, Ingles, Orwell, Chairman Mao, Marxism: Great men do not make history; class struggle does On Capitalism o Capitalist society characterized by conflict, not harmony o In industrial society, capitalism divides pop. Into two classes o Working class has 3 alternatives Cooperate with capitalists Form unions and modify social conditions Make revolutions Whoever controls means of production essentially controls everybody Difference in social position result from different relations to the means of production o New modes of production -> new classes o At both ends of class ladder, class stability is maintained by inheritance, education o Thus poverty and wealth are self-perpetuating Classes also have different 'class cultures,' different lifestyles, opportunities Dominant ideology (that there is no potential for positive change) of lower class Change through peaceful means (ex voting/unions) not emphasized
