March 12 th 2012 – POL101Y The End of the Nation-State Nationalism - A product of industrial society, nations arise from nationalism, not nationalism from nations - So does post-industrial society mean post-national era? o Melting national identities, shift from nation state to something above that o European Union European Union - Notions of European Federalism; to ensure Germany and France never fight again o European Coal and Steel community (France, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, 1951) - State Interests: o French want German economic power o Germans want French political influence o So, unite economies in order to unite state interests - Contradictions of coal and steel community - Treaties of Rome, 1957 (European Economic Community and Euratom) o EEC became EU (6 -> 27 countries) - Institutions o European Commission (members are loyal to EU) o European Council Appointed representatives of nation states (absence of democracy?) Legislate in council -> bring legislation to individual nations
