Unformatted text preview: Nanyang Technological University School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Division of Physics and Applied Physics PAP 119 Physics Lab Ib Experiment 7: Magnetic Field of Helmholtz Coils Background The Helmholtz coil was invented over a century ago to generate magnetic fields of specified strengths and uniformity. This allowed scientists and engineers to perform numerous experiments and test functions that require a known ambient magnetic field. The Helmholtz field generated can be static, time-varying DC or AC, depending on the application. Applications of the Helmholtz coil range from canceling the earth’s magnetic field for sensitive experiments, as well as generating magnetic fields to determine magnetic shielding e ff ectiveness, the susceptibility of electronic equipment to magnetic fields, calibration of magnetometers and naviga- tional equipment and for many bio-magnetic studies, just to name a few....
