Name: Solution __ - 1 - MSE 230 (Spring 2008) Quiz #2 (30 pts) 1. Fill the following terms in a Stress-strain curve: (14 pts) (A) Elastic region; (B) Plastic region; (C) Elastic modulus; (D) Yield strength; (E) Tensile strength; (F) Necking begins; (G) Fracture 2. X-ray Diffraction (16 pts) We’ve learned how to get the interplanar spacing (d hkl ) by measuring the diffraction angle 2 θ , and the relationship of d hkl with lattice parameter ( a ). We also learned how to determine a peak plane ( hkl ) is in BCC or FCC metal from h,k,l even or odd numbers. 1) A. What are the first two peaks you expect for a BCC metal? Show your calculations. B. Draw and label a sketch of the first two peaks in an X-ray diffraction pattern (No need to worry about the intensity on Y-axis). Explain how you determine the order of the two peaks on X-axis by showing your equations. 2) Repeat the above questions for a FCC metal. Solution:
