If the titration is feasible, suggest an appropriate indicator. HClO 4 is a weak acid with a K a of 3.0 × 10 -8 . The initial pH, therefore, is just that of a 0.025 M solution of this weak acid and is found by solving the K a expression for [H 3 O + ], yielding a value of 2.74 × 10 -5 M and a pH of 4.56. At the equivalence point the pH is fixed by the concentration of OCl - , which is the conjugate weak base of HOCl with a K b of 3.33 × 10 -7 . The equivalence point for the titration of 50.0 mL of 0.025 M HOCl with 0.050 M NaOH is at 25.0 mL. The concentration of OCl - , therefore, is 0.01667 M. Solving the K b expression for [OH - ] gives a value of 7.46 × 10 -5 M and a pH of 9.97.
