HW 1: Database Design 1. What is the purpose of an E-R model? It is used to depict the relationship that exists among entities. 2. What is an entity? An Entity is any person place or thing with characteristics or attributes that will be in the system. An entity must have at least two attributes. 3. Give an example of three entities that might exist in a database for a medical office and some attributes that would be stored in a table for each entity. 1. Patient Records (Patient Name, ID Number, weight, age) 2. Employees (Name, Job Title, degree) 3. Inventory (Number of Patients, Number of employees) 4. Define a one-to-many relationship. Each Occurrence of data in one entity can be represented by many occurrences of the date in other entities. 5. Discuss the problems that can be caused by data redundancy. Redundancy can decrease the accuracy of the database and confuse the database user, it also can slow down a database by having unnecessary data. 6.
