Ch. 5 Intrapersonal Communication 1. Self talk Self-Talk: Intrapersonally communicating within yourself. (often silent thinking; internal speech) o Linguistic development: (children) Prelinguistic/Preconceptual Stage Liguistic Stage Conceptual Stage Rhetorical stage. Self Concept: o 7 signs with a weak sense of self: Sensitivity to criticism: Displayed by a person not liking when people point out any shortcomings. Inappropriate response to flattery: Hypercritical attitude: People do not feel good about themselves often have trouble feeling good about anyone else. Tendency towards blaming: Feeling of persecution: People with low self-esteem tend to believe the world is against them. Negative feelings about competition: Tendency towards seclusion and timidity: Self Esteem: Self Love: accepting yourself as a worthy person because you choose to do so. 2. Cognitive Processing The act of cognitive processing is the comprehending, organizing, and storing of ideas. Most people try to keep their actions parallel to their values, beliefs, and attitudes.
