Discussions To participate in the following discussions, go to this week's Discussion link in the left navigation. Teacher Engagement and Academic Achievement In Exhibit 2 Chapter 7, Ferguson (2008) illustrates how teacher engagement can lead to improved student achievement. In spite of this, ineffective professional development continues and contributes to achievement inequities. Discuss the challenges public school teachers face in fostering academic excellence for both themselves and for their students. Reflect on at least two of your peers’ postings. For the first time in our nation’s history Teachers are facing issues they never had to deal with before. What I mean by this is, teachers have classrooms that they must teach every child equally. There was a time that behavior and lack of child’s efforts would force the teacher to avoid the child and concentrate there efforts on the children that do need the help and do what to learn. Since the No Child left behind act teachers are faced with behavior problems that they are not use to dealing with, Special needs children that are in main stream classes that teachers usually did not have in there classes before and they are dealing with language barriers in some classroom. Teachers are being asked to fulfill the promise of American education by finding ways to produce both academic excellence and equity with all students regardless of there ability to learn or level of learning. This makes it challenging for the teachers because they have over populated classrooms with more issues to deal with and little or no help. They are still
