Unformatted text preview: Changes in Education Tabitha Floyd SOC312: Child Family & Society Eboni LaMar September 27 th, 2010 Changes in Education There has been many changes in education over the years. Many I have read about and some I have experience. Changes affect the teachers as well as the students. These changes start with the classroom. Teachers have a lot more to deal with in a classroom then they use to. There are more special needs children in regular classrooms then ever before. This makes teachers ability to teach a lot more complicated because each child has there own way of learning and they must be able to meet each child’s needs. Another change that has come to the classroom is the diversity of the students now teachers have to try to teach a child that does speaks little or no English that brings great frustration to the teacher and the student. The teacher has to find a way to reach and teach these students and it can be a challenge. The third major challenge that affects the classroom is social changes. Things like students that has families where either both parents work or single parent families. These students face more challenges and have less parental involvement because of the lack of time a parent has. These are all things teachers have to deal with and it is hard to accommodate a classroom with so many issues going on. Some teachers get frustrated and have to way out the fact of whether it is worth dealing with all the things that comes with teaching in schools today. Do teachers like to teach? Teaching is more then just books, lesson s and grading papers. Most teachers learn this the first few years of being in the classroom. This is when they decide if teaching is for them. This decision is a personal one. The teachers that are left in the classrooms after a few years are usually the one that like there jobs as a teacher. You may hear a lot of complains but for the most part they enjoy what they do and the reward of a child succeeding is the reason they teach. When most teachers were asked if they enjoyed there job as a teacher. Over eighty percent said yes. (Sadker,Zittleman(2009) The main problem is all the wrong people are make the decisions for the classroom. Teachers are not part of the decision making process when it comes to the issues of curriculum and finances. When we start letting teachers have a bigger say in these things then I feel teachers would be less stressed and be able to get the things needed in the classroom. This would not solve all the problems but it would help people to understand the importance of what is needed in the classroom. Whether it is extra help for a special needs child or just the supplies needed to help a child learn in there own learning style....
