M405: Seven Basic SPC Tools Page 4 HISTOGRAM A histogram can be used to identify the frequency of quality defect occurrence and display quality performance. General guidelines for constructing histograms: 1. Use between 4 and 20 classes - often choosing the number of classes (cells) approximately equal to the square root of the number of data points works well. 2. Use uniform width for all classes. 3. Start the lower limit for the first cell slightly below the smallest value.
