Science and  Technology During the next decade, Alexander Graham Bell developed the first  telephone with commercial capacity. By 1900 there were 1.35 million  telephones, and by 1920 13.3 million. And the Italian inventor Guglielmo  Marconi was taking the first steps toward the development of radio in the  1890’s; the technology he developed quickly found its way to the United  States. Other inventions that speeded the pace of business organization  were the typewriter (by Christopher L. Sholes in 1868), the cash register  (by James Ritty in 1879), and the calculating or adding machine (by  William S. Burroughs in 1891). 1 2.
