AP Biology Models of Multicellular Development Adapted from CLC Evolution Objective The learner will make clay models to learn about the types of body cavities and symmetry seen in the major phyla of eukaryotes. Materials AP Biology textbook sheet of copy paper (1 per student) 6 cm diameter ball of colored modeling clay (1 per student) pinch of a different color modeling clay (1 per student) plastic knife (2 per lab station) digital camera How It’s Done Place each shape on your paper and take a picture of it before you move on to the next shape. Form your clay into the following shapes: o an asymmetrical shape o a radially symmetric shape o a bilaterally symmetric shape o a pancake shape o turn that flat shape into a blastula by folding it over into a hollow ball press on half of the ball into the other half, so it looks like a half moon, to simulate a blastula undergoing gastrulation o cut the gastrula in half to see that it now has two layers, just as a ball of dividing cells has two cell layers o add a layer of mesoderm cells (represented by a different color of clay) to either the blastocoel or the deep interior of the gastrula placement depends on whether you’re making a protostome or a deuterostome
