Ch 1 intro and background Law- a body of enforceable laws governing relationships among individuals and between individuals and their society Purposes of law- Protection and safety, social structure, control, Stability, Predictability, continuity Civil Law- the branch of law dealing with the definition and enforcement of all private or public rights, as opposed to criminal matters Criminal Law- law that defines and governs actions that constitute crimes. Generally criminal law has to do with wrongful actions committed against society for which society demands actions 3 main sources of law Constitutional law- law that is based on the U.S. constitution and the constitutions of carious states Statutory law- law enacted by legislative body 55 mph Administrative law- law created by administrative agencies Stare Decisis- a common law doctrine under which judges are obligated to follow the precedents of prior decisions Binding Authority- a court must follow these rules including constituions,
