Jason Lau Timed Essay 2 3/22/12 My parents raised me with an American culture and barely ever acknowledged my Chinese heritage. Thus, I was never really familiar with what it meant to be Chinese. I was always curious about China and always wanted to learn about Chinese culture and history. Reading Sontag’s analysis about the Chinese notion of images really struck a chord with me. I immediately knew I wanted to do more research on the subject. However, I realized that choosing to engage in research about the role of photography in socialist China requires one to become just as familiar with the history as with the topic itself. I have found that these topics as well as the sources were difficult to analyze without being familiar with the historical context of the sources. Chinese history, especially during the Cultural Revolution, is fairly complex, as it deals with power struggles among party leaders as well as civil unrest in general society.
