Mixture of classes. Comedy in Italian never loses connection to origins: improvisation, to conditions where social confusion is licensed. Unconstrained: in improvised comedy in Italian that order and constraint could be ridiculed. Musically: mixture of types of singing, simple to virtuosic. The way a character sings signals both social class and its subversion. Natural range of voice types, from soprano to bass. Castrati were restricted to opera seria. Comedy foregrounds action rather than meditation.

Action, dialogue, etc., become central and move from recitative into the numbers. In opera buffa numbers are not just arias, but ensemble pieces (duets, trios, quartets, and on up). The formal organization and complex musical language in numbers is accommodated to the flow of interactions in the drama....
