Music 30 – History of Opera Young Verdi Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901) and Richard Wagner (1813-1883) Verdi’s earlier operas to 1850 (among others): Nabucco 1842, famous for its chorus “Va, pensiero” which was played at Verdi’s funeral Ernani , 1844 Macbeth , 1847 Luisa Miller , 1849 The latter three are based on Ernani by Victor Hugo, Shakespeare’s Macbeth , and Friedrich Schiller’s Kabale und Liebe Rigoletto 1851 (based on Victor Hugo, Le roi s’amuse ) La traviata 1853 (based on Alexandre Dumas fils, La dame aux camellias : the Greta Garbo movie version was Camille ) Il trovatore 1853 Characters in La traviata (*=stars with arias, others are minor roles) *Violetta Valéry (soprano), a consumptive Parisian courtesan, courted and won by *Alfredo Germont (tenor), a young upper-middle class man, of good family, and an idealist, one of two children of *Giorgio Germont (baritone), a strict disapproving father, who convinces Violetta to give up his son, whereupon in despair she returns to Paris and her frivolous and/or licentious
