Unformatted text preview: Reactions of Alkanes • Understanding the basic reactivity of simple alkanes will allow us to discuss some of the physical properties of organic molecules such as the strength of bonds • This allows us to predict something about the products one might expect from a chemical transformation – a reaction! • If we know something about the energy involved in a reaction and something about HOW that reaction occurs then we have a good chance of being able to make what we want to make. This involves an understanding of mechanism Reactions of Alkanes • Imagine the engine of a car. The input is gasoline and an ignition source. The output is mechanical energy that drives the wheels. How would you fix the car, or design a better one if you had no idea how the inputs turn into the outputs? • It’s the mechanism of action that becomes important and tied to that are the energetics of the process Strength of Bonds – Table 3-1 • When bonds form, energy is released • Breaking such a bond requires the input of heat • This energy is called BOND-DISSOCIATION ENERGY, or BOND STRENGTH Strength of Bonds – Table 3-1...
