National Wildlife Refuge Massassoit, Maryland Massassoit National Wildlife Refuge is administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and is one of 500 such refuges in the National Wildlife Refuge System. This system is a network of lands and waters managed specifically to protect wildlife and habitat and is the most comprehensive wildlife management program in the world. Welcome to Massassoit National Wildlife Refuge—an area set aside to protect wildlife and the habitats many species need to survive. At Massassoit National Wildlife Refuge, we place special emphasis on managing and protecting a number of threatened and endangered species that call this area home. Enjoy your visit, and remember that you are only a visitor to this area, whereas many birds, animals, and plants are the permanent residents. Please read and comply with the following regulations: Wildlife and Ecosystem Obey posted speed limits. Many species of animals and birds graze or nest near the Refuge’s roads. Park only in designated paved areas.
