Melissa Walters MIS 598 Food of the Future: Will Agricultural Biotechnology Save Us? Or Are We Opening Pandora’s Box? With approximately 925 million people in the world suffering from hunger, technological innovation brings hope that technology will be the end to the hunger and malnutrition. Agricultural biotechnology, particularly in the form of genetically modified crops has assured a degree of food security will result from their application. The development of genetically modified crops and those used for food production have generated significant public debates, while the potential of these crops to increase yields, enhance health benefits, as well as their ability to grow in hostile environments is tantalizing, there is also the concern about the effects the technology will have on human and environmental health. While opinions about genetically modified crops vary from country to country there is no distinct pattern to determine if those crops will be accepted or rejected in a country. The United States supports the production of these crops; however, other developed nations such as France and Great Britain have experienced public outcries against genetically modified crops and have since banned their
