Purpose The purpose of this experiment is to demonstrate the concepts of percent alcohol by mass, percent alcohol by volume, and proof of alcohol. It demonstrates these concepts by providing an unknown solution and a separatory funnel to separate and extract the ethanol and the water. Percent alcohol by mass, percent alcohol by volume, and proof of alcohol was calculated after the extraction. This experiment also demonstrates that the volumes of ethanol and water are not additive. Procedure To calculate the density of ethanol and the density of water, 3 mL of each liquid was weighed. When finding the volume percent of alcohol in the unknown solution, 1.0483 grams of salt was measured and added into the separatory funnel with the solution. The separatory funnel was then shaken and vented multiple times in order to dissolve the salt.
